A GEDCOM analysis tool for AI agents

1 min readFamily tree analysis

I built an AI tool that spots in seconds what would take you weeks to find in a family tree by hand.

What is it?

A skill is a set of instructions and scripts that extends what AI assistants can do. This one works with Claude Code and other tools that support skills.

Put simply: you tell the AI “analyze my GEDCOM file,” and it already knows what to look for and how to interpret the results.

What it can do

  • Flags weddings during church fasts or the busy harvest season
  • Flags first children born soon after a wedding, a sign the bride may already have been pregnant
  • Looks for “replacement names,” when a child was named after a baby who had died
  • Looks for clusters of deaths that may point to an epidemic
  • Checks names against the Orthodox saints’ calendar and finds namesakes among relatives
  • Checks whether patronymics (names formed from the father’s first name) match the father’s actual name
  • And about 20 other kinds of analysis

It’s all tuned to Russian Orthodox traditions before 1917: the Julian calendar, fasts, and the rhythm of peasant life.

How to try it

If you have Claude Code:

git clone https://github.com/tamvodopad/claude-code-skill-genealogy-analyzer.git ~/.claude/skills/genealogy-analyzer

Then, from the folder with your GEDCOM file, tell the AI agent: “Analyze my GEDCOM file for anomalies.”

The repository has detailed instructions for different AI tools: https://github.com/tamvodopad/claude-code-skill-genealogy-analyzer

Want to see what it finds? Here’s a real insight from my own tree.
